Showing better form each time she steps up to the table, Rebecca made her way to the semi finals to find Anna Liddle of Edinburgh, who had beatten Rebecca in the Primary Schools Final early in the season. Rebecca wasted no time in setting to task and made up for her early season loss to Anna to move on to the final against first seed Nadia Docherty of Glasgow. Lack of conentration and unforced errors let Nadia take a 2 game lead. A pep talk with coach, Sean Doyle, before the start of game 3 provided the motivation for Rebecca to win the next 2 games and taking the match to a 5 game decider. Both girls produced Table Tennis worthy of the National final with Rebecca edging Nadia out 12-10, leaving the court with a huge victory smile knowing she was the 2012 Scottish Champion.

Colin & Chirs remained undefeated while Richard's only loss was to Scottish no4 Stewart Crawford. Allan McCarry stepped up to replace Chris as Chris was unfit to play and scored a fantastic win over Daniel Swiatek 3-0. This is a great acheivement for the club, winning the top division in Scotland in which several top 10 players in Scotland compete in. North Ayrshire Open, Cadet Assessment and National Senior League are all Scottish Ranking Tournaments which will be held and set up by ATTA and North Ayrshire TTC. This is fantastic news, meaning all the top players will be competing in Ayrshire and travel arrangements for our players are made a lot easier.

Ayrshire Senior League is penciled in to be played over 3 weekends meaning plenty of matches each day. Top players in Ayrshire are already shown interest in playing and with the wide variety of players our area, this should be an interesting and successful 1st year of the Ayrshire League. Entry forms are available to download.

Ayrshire Masters will be held at The Lauriston Hotel in Saltcoats on the 13th January and will be a table tennis tournament with a difference. It will kick off at 7.30pm and will have 1 show court, a full bar, smart dress code, some light entertainment, a raffle with great prizes and of course high class table tennis. 6 Scottish Internationalists will be invited to play with 2 places up for grabs for our Ayrshire junior players to compete for through 2 qualification days.

Its also a great chance for all junior and senior players to get some serious practise in before the new busy season starts.

This is the 1st step towards a place at the Scottish Schools with the players who reach the semi's of their age group qualifying. An impressive entry of more than 40 boys and girls from all the different clubs in ayrshire took part. A visit from John Scott MSP and a reporter from our local newspaper was highly appreciated. The hall was perfectly set up with plently of room for the players, parents and coaches to enjoy a brilliant day of table tennis. <span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); In the run up to the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, TTS received a Performance Grant of £120,000 each year to achieve qualification. Sportscotland formally advised TTS this week that in the run up to Glasgow 2014, this is to be slashed to £20,000, an 83% cut.

The reason given is that Sportscotland and the Sportscotland Institute of Sport do not think TTS can meet the criteria of Top 8 / Medal Potential expected to be set by Commonwealth Games Scotland for participation by any Scottish sport in Glasgow 2014. This message is sent to TTS despite our men’s team already being ranked 7th in the Commonwealth and already meeting the criteria. However we cannot maintain that position without adequate funding. Cutting our Performance funding this way ensures we will not be able to meet the criteria when assessed in 2014. It seems we are being singled out as the sport not to have Scottish presence in Glasgow 2014. No explanation has been given for this.

We demonstrated that the investment received in the run up to Delhi was successful: we achieved our highest ever World team Ranking of 39th, one behind England 38th, in Moscow 2010. Our team members have improved their World Ranking and met the CGS Criteria for participation in Delhi 2010.

Terry McLernon MBE is already working hard on the legacy aspects of Glasgow 2014 and what it can mean locally for communities in Glasgow and these cuts are a body blow to his work in that area. Further cuts of £10,000 were made to TTS’ Development funding, restricting TTS’ ability to bring Table Tennis into schools, clubs and local communities and to build on the legacy of Glasgow 2014.

All Sports have been subjected to this funding review but TTS funding has been cut in absolute and percentage terms more than any other sport – the next most severely cut sport only lost 11% of their total funding.

The facts relating to all the sports’ funding cuts and our performance against CGS criteria speak for themselves. TTS is led to the conclusion that these are key questions for Sportscotland / SIS:

How can Sportscotland and the Sportscotland Institute of Sport justify excluding TTS from participation in Glasgow 2014?

How can Sportscotland and the Sportscotland Institute of Sport justify singling out TTS from the 17 participating sports for exclusion from Glasgow 2014?

Press Contacts:

Jonathan Whitaker Chairman TTS

j@whitaker331.freeserve.co.uk

Tel: 01738 444388

Mob: 077177 17894

Terry McLernon MBE Vice Chairman TTS

telldrum@aol.com

Mob: 07743 702744

Official Press Release from Jonathan Whitaker, Chairman of Table Tennis Scotland

Each form is self explanatory however the Committee would like to highlight some important areas.

We will all be playing under the Ayrshire Table Tennis Association (ATTA)banner. Those playing in our own Leagues will have the possibility of being selected to represent Ayrshire at Table Tennis Scotland’s Inter League.

To demonstrate to Table Tennis Scotland (TTS) that Table Tennis is alive and growing in Ayrshire, it is important that all player registration/affiliation to TTS is done through the ATTA.

Those who also play in the WoSTTL will not be paying double affiliation fees to TTS. As an Example: A senior player who plays on the ATTA League & the WoSTTL will Pay £25.00 to ATTA (£20 TTs plus £5 ATTA) and £15.00 to WoSTTL. The highest level that most of them have thus far competed at.

At the moment, we have several players who are already showing signs of having the potential to become stars of the future. Although as a whole, we have some catching up to do. I know that some have voiced their disappointment at the gap between the top players and some of our youngsters.

If you'll indulge me, I would like to give everyone some food for thought.

Firstly, I know that some players do not wish to progress any further than recreational play and that is absolutely fine. Our aim should always be to promote the playing of the game at all levels so that it is enjoyed by an ever increasing number of people of all ages and of any standard. We do however have a parallel aim which is to promote excellence in the sport. Which means even at this embryonic stage of the ATTA's development, we should and will strive for our players to eventually become competitors at the highest levels.

Although because I was competing in the event, I was not able to pay too much attention to our youngsters' performances at the weekend, one thing was blatantly apparent. The ATTA players who were most successful, were those who have put the hours in, week in, week out in constructive practice, usually with a dedicated coach. I congratulate them, their parents and their coaches.

Here's the rub: Most of our players departed the arena once their team was eliminated. Yet to a man, we always complain that our young players don't get enough table time. It was an eye-opener to see many of the players from Drumchapel Scotland's most successful club) seizing the opportunity to continue practicing on the ever-increasing number of spare tables as Sunday's events progressed. We paid to enter the tournament, there were free tables, but on the whole we failed to grasp an opportunity for some free practice time. I know that the players were tired, but to improve, they have to push the envelope in the same way that their competitors unflinchingly do. That said, I do accept that it was a Sunday and families do have other commitments.

One other thing I would like to add, is that the finals of the senior competitions were well-worth watching. A missed opportunity (for most) of our youngsters to experience and be inches away from true blood-and-guts, highly skilful competition and learn important lessons on how much effort they will have to apply to their games and competitive matches, in order to improve over the coming years. I was a little disappointed that there weren't more of them there to take in the tension and atmosphere and see the game played at its excellent best.
To summarise: Success is and always will be directionally proportional to how much time, effort and dedication that players, coaches and indeed parents are willing to apply. Nobody in Scotland, the UK, Europe or the World is born a champion. All champions have stayed that extra hour, run that extra mile and sacrificed some comfortable aspect of their lives in order to get where they are. It's the players' free choice. But we have to let them know that if they want to be good at the game, they have to put as much time and effort into it as they can spare and grasp every opportunity to play and learn.

Thank you for your indulgence.

Kind regards,

Roy
Chairman ATTA

These mainly covered the following aspects:

- Rather than the National League Committee deciding who was in which division for the first year, a (round-robin) tournament should be organised at the end of the year from which the divisions for 2010/11 will be decided.

- In the past, all teams had to provide a qualified umpire for each fixture. It was suggested this was included in the proposal - it would also increase the number of qualified umpires in Scotland which is a bonus. However, this could hinder the interest in the competition potentially?

- Regarding eligibility, most people preferred the option of only players from the club entered in the local league are allowed to enter though it was requested that, were the ‘Dundee Vets', ‘Aberdeen Scouts' (for example) wanting to enter as a team with players from different clubs from the local area then they would be allowed to.

Looking forward, this is the anticipated plan:

- Replies from LLCs by 20/11/09

- Confirmation of interest from clubs/teams by 15/12/09

- First committee meeting to set dates/rules/entry fees January 2010

- Confirmation of entries from clubs/teams by end February 2010

- Round-Robin tournament to decide leagues in 2010/11 ~April 2010

- Competition starts Autumn 2010

Could you please let your clubs, coaches or whoever you think would be interested in the creation of these leagues aware of the proposal and reply to Sean Doyle 18th of November with any comments/suggestions?

Also, if you have people who are interested in being on the National League committee or have any other questions, please forward them so thay can be passed to Table tennis Scotland.

Download the proposal
